Seascape connectivity of temperate fishes between estuarine nursery areas and open coastal reefs

چکیده
While estuaries are considered valuable nurseries for many harvested fish species, little quantitative data exist about the spatial scales over which supply individuals to coastal reefs and how this influences metapopulations. Quantifying connectivity between will assist sustainable management of fisheries key habitat. This information is particularly pertinent considering world-wide experiencing degradation habitat loss. We examine relative abundance body length three exploited fishes (Chrysophrys auratus, Pseudocaranx georgianus Nemadactylus douglasii) varied in relation proximity size nearest estuary, predicting that estuarine dependent species (i.e. C. auratus) would be smaller more abundant on close large estuaries. As a network ‘no-take’ marine reserves across study area, we also assessed reserve effects if these were influenced by Fish assemblages surveyed using baited remote underwater video systems deployed 629 rocky 417 km coastline south-eastern Australia. predicted, auratus adjacent (<8.5 km), consistent with being heavily reliant as nursery habitats. Neither nor N. douglasii P. or Marine consistently had higher abundances larger regardless their However, variable both georgianus. Synthesis applications. Our results suggest dispersal subadult Chrysophrys from occurs relatively small scales, highlighting conserving ecological functioning paramount sustaining recruitment nearby fisheries. The seascape nursery: a novel spatial approach to identify and manage nurseries for coastal marine fauna
Coastal marine and estuarine ecosystems are highly productive and serve a nursery function for important fisheries species. They also suffer some of the highest rates of degradation from human impacts of any ecosystems. Identifying and valuing nursery habitats is a critical part of their conservation, but current assessment practices typically take a static approach by considering habitats as i...
متن کامل-CONNECTIVITY BETWEEN A:D:JACENT ESTUARINE AND COAST kL REGIONS FOR THREE COMMERCIALLY IMPOR'FANT MA:RINE FISHES
I. Estuaries are regarded as valuable nursery habitats for many commercially important marine fishes. Recruitment of fish from estuarine nursery habitats to adult marine populations is considered important for maintenance of fishable stocks, but most evidence for this is qualitative. Effective and timely implementation of estuarine conservation and fisheries management plans may be aided by qua...
متن کاملDiel Rhythms in Coastal Temperate Fishes at the Obsea
We used for the first time a coastal cabled observatory (OBSEA, www.obsea.es) to video-monitor activity rhythms of different fish species within an artificial reef area at a high frequency (30 min). Fish counts were continuously obtained at day and night during one month and compared with the corresponding solar irradiance data. A significant (p < 0.05) 24-h patter in counts was observed in the...
متن کاملHabitat Connectivity of Fish in Temperate Shallow-Water Seascapes
Movements of organisms comprise a fundamental aspect of coastal habitat connectivity. Determining the distribution and co-existence of habitat specialists and generalists in shallow-water seascapes leads to a better understanding of the strength of connectivity-driven community patterns in coastal areas. In this study, unbaited Remote Underwater Video (RUV) systems were used to examine habitat ...
متن کاملPredatory fishes affect trophic cascades and apparent competition in temperate reefs.
We provide evidence for a trophic cascade involving apex predators and mesopredators of marine temperate reefs, lingcod and rockfish, respectively. We measured spatio-temporal variation in the relative abundance of lingcod, subadult rockfish and two shrimp groups eaten by rockfish (Pandalus sp. and three smaller-bodied genera aggregated). Lingcod had an indirect positive effect on shrimps, as m...
